Church at heart of community action

A SOUTHSIDE church is offering to help those in need.

Reverend Neil Galbraith, chief executive officer of Glasgow – The Caring City will launch the event at 11am on Monday in Eastwood Church halls.

Councillor Colin Deans and James Dornan MSP will also be in attendance.

Minister reverend Graham Cartlidge said: “The emphasis of the lunch will be on the dimension of general companionship for those who may well not be in any particular physical need but would benefit from not being alone for a while

“In response to the changing needs in our local community in difficult economic times, we are trying, by creating a meeting point, to reach out and encourage more people to come along and use the services on offer”.

Dr Martin Johnstone, the priority areas secretary with the Church of Scotland’s ministries council lives in Shawlands and is a member of Pollokshaws Parish Church

He said: “The church is seeking to address some of the real challenges facing many communities at this time including, specifically, the rising levels of poverty as the impact of the public sector recession hits the most vulnerable”.

The name of the centre has been changed from the Eastwood asylum and community drop-in centre to The Point and launch day will include distribution of donated clothing and household goods, English classes and crèche facilities.

Representatives from community services will be available to give advice on matters such as housing, education, debt collection and health.

A free lunch will also be available and local people are encouraged to bring their friends and neighbours along.

To help with the venture, the church is looking to recruit some volunteers with free time on a Monday. To help, phone 585 3220.
