Charity employment scheme scoops award

GIFFNOCK based charity Cosgrove Care has picked up an award for its supported employment scheme.

The learning disability and mental health organisation runs two charity shops in Shawlands, each employing service users in a bid to boost their employability and skills.

The scheme, set up in 2007, enables those with learning disabilities to gain experience and qualifications in the hope of gaining paid work elsewhere – and improving the current statistics, as only 16 per cent of those with learning disabilities are currently in employment.

The project scooped a Principles into Practice award at a recent ceremony, in the care and support of younger people category

Derek Brown, Cosgrove’s supported employment manager, explained: “We were over the moon to find out we had been nominated and then shortlisted.

“Principles into Practice awards are one of the ways we find, share and celebrate best practice. Services, projects and teams who have embraced the principles in their work and can show how this has made a different are put forward to the final, and it was such good news for our project to find out we had won.”

Pictured is supported employment student David Freedman celebrating the project’s latest accolade.

As reported in The Extra, the win follows another at the end of last year, when service user Barry Vallance was nominated for employee of the year at the Scottish Business Diversity awards – and was delighted to pick up bronze at the Edinburgh event.

The charity is also celebrating a partnership with a local RIAS-registered architect, in which every free consultation will result in a donation to Cosgrove Care.

The company will offer hour-long design consultations for free, in exchange for a donation for Cosgrove – and it’s up to you how much you give.

To find out more, and for details of the architect involved, contact Cosgrove’s community fundraiser, Nicola Diamond, on 620 2500 or ndiamond@cosgrovecare.org.uk.
