Bin pick up confusion

RESIDENTS have branded Glasgow city council's new refuse collection system rubbish.

Southsiders claim they are in the dark over when to put their bins out after the council introduced a new seven-day timetable.

Furious residents on Stoneside Drive, off Thornliebank Road, contacted The Extra when no one showed up on the new Thursday collection day.

After a call to GCC's press office the bins were eventually emptied — five days late.

One resident, David Kerr, said: "We've had no information about the new service. Luckily, I have access to the internet — not everyone does — and checked to see when the uplift would be.

"It said Thursday, so I put the bin out but it wasn't collected. It has been sitting out ever since as I didn't want to bring it back in, in case someone came to remove the rubbish.

"But then this is when you are inviting the magpies, vermin and foxes in. It's not safe or sanitary to leave bins of rubbish lying out on the streets".

The switch to seven-day refuse collection is aimed at saving money, improving services and protecting jobs.

David added: "Many residents haven't received the notification the council said it would give and are none the wiser to the change.

"They don't know when their refuse is to be collected. What a way to treat your customers, especially as this is the second time in a short period there has been disruption to refuse collection".

A council spokeswoman confirmed residents of Stoneside Drive would have their bins uplifted every Thursday but admitted more problems will occur as workers get used to new shift patterns.

She said: "Residents with a kerbside collection service should have received a leaflet informing them of their collection day.

"The new service is bedding in and we're confident residents will soon see a better, more efficient service than before".

Bins will be collected anytime between 7am and 6pm, seven days a week. Information is available on the council website www.glasgow.gov. uk.
