Glasgow landmarks then and now - see how Buchanan Street, Central Station and more have changed

We took a look through the archive to see how some of Glasgow’s most iconic landmarks have changed over the decades.

Some appear little different from their original state, while others have been knocked down completely.

Take a look through these sliders to see how these locations have changed.

Union Street

This looks at the junction between Renfield Street, Union Street and Gordon Street. While the shops have changed, most of the buildings look the same.

St Vincent Street church

The church has not changed much since when this photo was taken, however, it’s impossible to get the same view now - a new office block blocks the view.

Red Road flats

The original picture shows the flats as work continues to finish them - the new one, a few years after the final demolition in 2015.

George Square

This picture from 1948 shows Princess Margaret after receiving the freedom of the city in George Square. Even the Google Maps picture is out of date - traffic can no longer go past the City Chambers.

It was easier to catch the sun in 1969 than it would be now - there’s much less grass for a start.

Central Station

Central Station might be a bit less atmospheric than it was when the original picture was taken, but many of the buildings inside remain.

Caledonia Road Church

The Caledonia Road Church is a lone piece of history now, surrounded by roads and new developments.

Buchanan Street

We had to give up working out where this picture on Buchanan Street was taken - the placards covering the signs makes it more difficult than usual. The street has certainly changed in the last few decades, though.

Alhambra Theatre

The Alhambra Theatre was closed and demolished not long after this picture from 1969. It was replaced by the Alhambra House office block.
