Art school goes eco-friendly
YOUNG artists in Glasgow are about to become eco-friendly as its Mackintoch building moves to be carbon neutral.
The world-famous building at the top of the city centre is working with the ScottishPower Green Energy Trust to replace its outdated gas boiler heating system with a modern end environmentally-friendly biomass, wood pellet one.
The trust gave the Glasgow School of Art a £10,000 funding boost to help instal the system which will provide low-carbon heating and hot water across three buildings – the Mackintosh, the Bourdon and the new Design School building currently under construction.
It is hoped the new building will achieve a BREEAM rating for sustainable building design, construction and operation.
This will represent a major, new renewable source of heat for the school.
The art school’s own green technology research centre worked with others to investigate ways of dealing with the problem and found that biomass is the most efficient way of heating the buildings.
After completion, the project’s results will be added to the syllabus as a working example for students learning about sustainable, environmental design.
