A PLAQUE commemorating the 200th anniversary of Pollokshaws joining Glasgow was unveiled to residents yesterday (Monday).

The event followed an exhibition by Pollokshaws Heritage Group in October, which showcased artefacts collected by the organisation in honour of the bicentennial year.

Unveiling the plaque – which will now be on permanent display at Pollokshaws library – was bailie Josephine Docherty, councillor for Newlands and Auldburn.

She said: “I was delighted to be invited to unveil the plaque celebrating the anniversary of the incorporation of Pollokshaws into Glasgow.

“Pollokshaws – and its people – have given so much to Glasgow and the wider community over many years, and this is a fitting tribute to mark the 200th anniversary.

“The location of the plaque is an excellent choice, in that it will provide an important focus for the people to remember the valuable contribution their area has made, and will continue to make, to Glasgow.

“I hope it will act as a sign of pride for residents, and contribute to the renewal of the area in future years.”

Heritage Group archivist George Rountree told The Extra: “The unveiling of the plaque was some time in preparation and the group and library are delighted it has arrived.”

The organisation – which has been running since 1997 – also acquired a new addition to their collection, courtesy of Glasgow Museums Resource Centre in South Nitshill: a painting by Walter L Pender, of Greenview Street, dated 1900.
