A cuppa for cancer care
MEETING for coffee became a fundraising affair this week as southsiders banded together in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
The annual World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event – launched on Friday – saw groups across Glasgow and East Renfrewshire contribute to the coffer in the hope of matching the £10 million raised nationwide last year.
Macmillan’s Elaine Hamilton, from Clarkston, confirmed that 950 events were planned in the Glasgow area, and Extra readers have been in touch to share their efforts.
Eastwood parish church raised £435 at their event, along with a pledge of a further £100. Visitors to the coffee morning were also given the opportunity to text a £5 donation to the Macmillan cause.
The church also welcomed BBC Scotland on the day, and the event was broadcast on the Sunday Politics programme later in the weekend.
Organiser Ann Henderson told The Extra: “All in all it was a good turnout, especially considering the weather on the day. We had delicious home baking, guess the teddy bear’s name, guess the weight of the cake and more. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to come and support this event”.
Other success stories include Cathcart baptist church, which has raised £400 so far, and Cartvale pub in Busby, with a total of £1,000 and “a great day” had by all.
Derrick Watson, pastor at Cathcart baptist church, commented: “The coffee morning took place because of people we care about needing the kind of support and understanding Macmillan do so well.
“Thanks to all who provided, who served and who gave”.
Over in Bellahouston, staff at the House for an Art Lover were also on the fundraising trail, and sales and events executive Shona Ferguson explained: “We sold some gorgeous cakes baked by our fantastic team of chefs.
“We are delighted to have raised a total of £219.31 for Macmillan and would like to thank everyone who came along to support the coffee morning”.
Of course, the cancer charity has long been supported by southsiders, and recently issued a thank you to the Eaglesham 1990 Macmillan Cancer Support Committee, which has raised nearly £1 million since it began.
The group takes on two fundraising challenges each year, and the latest takes place this autumn with an East Renfrewshire Music Services concert.
The East Ren schools’ senior string orchestra, senior concert band and jazz band will be joined by the Firebird string quartet from the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow at Eastwood Park Theatre.
The event takes place on November 1 at 7.30pm, and tickets are £10 (available on 577 4970) – with proceeds going to Macmillian Cancer Support.
