To start off, we have a bit of a political animal. Levellers have released a new, collaborative album with some heavy hitters covering their songs.
But that’s by-the-by as the band — formed in the 80s and achieving success in the 90s — are currently on tour promoting their ‘Greatest Hits’ recording.
And if you can boast a name like Billy Bragg as a guest performing on said album, your street cred is more or less secure.
Levellers take their name from a faction of Oliver Cromwell’s New Model Army, as if to enforce the band’s political smarts.
The band are supported on this tour by 2-Tone veterans The Selector — fronted by original lead singer Pauline Black.
The bands can be found playing Glasgow’s O2 ABC on November 21.
Tickets are £22.50 and are available on 0141 332 2232.
Down at our fave southside hotspot The Glad Cafe, there’s an exciting bill for your enjoyment with Scottish folk artist Ewan McLennan.
Ewan has two critically-acclaimed albums and a BBC Radio 2 Horizon award tucked under his belt, so the release of his new album and this tour are highly-anticipated.
Tickets for the show are pegged at £10 and are available from 0141 636 6119.
But coming back to our political theme, two bands made their mark in that sense: The Housemartins and the successor group, The Beautiful South.
It’s arguable, but The Beautiful South had more impact on the music scene than the former with hits such as I Need a Little Time, Perfect 10, Don’t Marry Her, Old Red Eyes and Rotterdam.
The band fragmented during the naughties with both lead singer Jacqui Abbot and Paul Heaton leaving, before calling it a day.
However the remaining band members did not want to give up and so a new band was formed, The South, with new lead singers Dave Hemingway and Alison Wheeler.
Along with the old, much-loved, hits of yesteryear, The South have released a new album — Sweet Refrains — to entice the audiences back.
The South are playing Glasgow’s O2 ABC on Sunday, November 23.
Finally, new kids on the block Swedish electronica band Little Dragon are due to appear are also at the O2 ABC on Suday, November 23.
With an appearance on Later... With Joolz Holland, they are not to be missed.
