Covenant of support

THE leader of East Renfrewshire council has signed a community covenant pledge promising help and support for service personnel and veterans.
The document, which mimics the UK armed forces covenant, is meant to bring local organisations together in support for the armed forced community.
It has now been signed by East Renfrewshire council, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire and the armed forces itself, bringing the area in line with Glasgow city council, which signed in late 2011.
As part of the pledge, the organisations will actively promote personnel, veterans and their families to take advantage of welfare and money advice services, as well as housing options, education and discounted leisure services, health support and employment training.
ERC leader Jim Fletcher commented: “Bringing together public, health and voluntary sectors with military organisations will enable us to support our community fully and promote activity which integrates the service community into civilian life.
“Working together will also help us all to build an understanding of the needs of the armed forces and how we can best serve them”.
Lieutenant colonel Simon Higgens, MBE RE commanding officer at the Glasgow and Strathclyde universities officer training corps, added: “The covenant cements the relationship a community has with the armed forces personnel, their families and veterans living or working amongst them.
“The armed forced rely on the support and goodwill of society and I very much look forward to working with the council and other signatories to further develop that support”.
