A NEW director of education has been appointed by East Renfrewshire council.

Mhairi Shaw has taken up the position with immediate effect, moving from a previous position as head of education services.

Mrs Shaw was formerly the head teacher of Mearns Primary, from 2001 to 2004, and prior to that had held the same job at a school in Bellshill.

She has worked in education for more than 30 years.

Convener for education and equalities, councillor Elaine Green, said: “I’m absolutely delighted Mhairi has been appointed as our new director of education.

“Our young people’s exam results for this year were truly outstanding - in fact, they are the best we have ever had.

“That shows the quality of education Mhairi and her team is providing, and I know she will continue to build on that legacy.”

Mrs Shaw replaces John Wilson, who retired in August.
