PUPILS at Shawlands primary returned from their summer holidays to a brand new Playzone in their school.

The space — for primaries one to three and aimd at encouraging learning while playing — was created after the school’s parent council secured funding from the Pollokshields Area Community Fund.

Teachers, pupils, parents and volunteers worked throughout the summer break to bring the play room to life, and head teacher Elaine Hutton is delighted with the result.

She said: “This has given our pupils and staff a real treat at the start of the new academic year. It will really help improve the quality of learning for our P1s to P3s.”

Parent council chairman Jim Gemmell added: “It’s taken a lot of hard work but it’s been worth it.

“The space includes so many great elements, such as the castle, the graffiti wall and the reading area, all of which will help inspire young minds.”

The school held an official opening last Wednesday (September 11), attended by Patricia Leeson from Education Scotland, councillors David Meikle and Norman MacLeod, and all the staff, pupils and parent council members involved in the Playzone project.
