East Ren rallies for baton relay

It’s one for the history books this week as the Queen’s Baton Relay arrives in East Renfrewshire on Wednesday.

We’ve been writing those words for weeks and months now here at The Extra, covering the ins and outs of the relay and those lucky enough to be carrying the baton for the Commonwealth countdown.

Now, it’s time to explore just what’s on for the rest of you.

There are events taking place across East Ren throughout the day, from a puppet shows and storytelling to a sports roadshow with bikers and skateboarders, and the return of the Pokey Hat Theatre Company to Eastwood Park.

The Avenue will welcome the baton at 9.45am, and the Newton Mearns shopping centre is proud to present the Commonwealth Youth Circus to entertain those cheering crowds throughout the day.

The excitement continues into the evening with a big bang celebration at Cowan Park.

The free event requires a wristband for entry (these can be picked up at libraries or council offices) and kicks off at 5pm.

Special guests include Glasgow 2014 mascot Clyde and DJ Heather Suttie, who’ll be introducing performers including soloist Melissa Kelly, singer/guitarist Emma Bryceland, members of the Big Sing Legacy Choir, the Gillian Anderson School of Dance, singer Jono and Celtic group Duffy’s Gypsy Band.

Bringing the whole thing to a close are Bags of Rock — a seven-piece pipe and rock band playing upbeat Scottish tunes to mark the historic occasion.
