Clarkston couple Ian and Isabel Devine were delighted to welcome into their home, not only East Ren’s Lord Provost but also the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Alison Gilchrist.

The local couple were celebrating 60 years of wedded bliss and were overjoyed to receive the card from Her Majesty congratulating them on their remarkable achievement.

Isabel, attended Netherlee Primary School before moving to Williamwood High School while Ian went to Oatlands Primary School, then onto Queens Park Senior Secondary.

The couple met at the Plaza Ballroom at Eglington Toll. in the 1950’s before tying the know in Stamperland Parish Church on April 2, 1956.

Both were members of Clarkston Bowling Club and Glasgow Indoor Bowling Club which Ian still attends.

They have three daughters Elaine, Louise, and Lesley, and 6 grandchildren, Stuart, David, Katherine, Lucy, Jennifer, and Jack.

Isabel worked in various jobs over the years while bringing up the family, including a local ladies fashion shop and a pharmacy. Ian started his career working for the Post Office, before starting up his own business in 1976 which he retired from when he reached age 65.

Ian revealed to The Extra that the secret to a long and happy relationship is an understanding wife who allowed him to golf every weekend!

The couples daughters commented: “The family are all so proud of mum and dad on this huge achievement - it’s so rare for people to reach that magic 60 years together. They’ve been wonderful parents and the best grandparents a child could ask for, we all wish them many more happy years together.”
