MEN from East Renfrewshire are being sought to join the area’s children’s panel.
A nationwide recruitment drive has seen over 200 people come forward from East Ren – but of those looking for more information on joining the panel, very few are men.
The campaign was intended to fill 500 volunteer places across the country – six of them in East Ren – and residents are reminded that there’s still time to come forward if they think they have what it takes.
There are currently 2,500 panel volunteers in Scotland, each attending hearings to address the needs and behaviour of children and young people with serious problems.
These can range from abuse to truancy, difficulties with parents or committing an offence.
Catherine Smith, chair of the East Renfrewshire children’s panel advisory committee, explained: “The panel relies on attracting fresh volunteers and we need adults of all backgrounds to apply to ensure the system offers the best support.
“We’re not looking for men and women with specialist skills – simply those with the capacity to care about, and communicate with, children and families.
“We need dedicated local people with commitment and common sense to get involved”.
No qualifications are needed, and full training is given to successful volunteers.
