Video tells East Ren homes to say no to cold callers

With doorstep and phone scams forever hitting the headlines in East Renfrewshire, the council’s prevention team has gone on camera to share top safety tips.

East Ren trading standards have made a five minute movie, highlighting the cons people often fall prey to — and practical solutions on staying safe at home.

The short, called Confidence at Home and starring Frances Healy from Customer First, will be launched at Eastwood Park Theatre today(November 13), and shown alongside theatre performances over the coming weeks.

The prevention team will also be handing out Confidence at Home packs, alongside information stalls open from 10am.

Paul Holland, principal prevention officer, told The Extra: “This is a great way to reach a large number of residents.

“Hopefully they will pay attention to the short prevention film and pick up the packs. Sadly, our elderly residents are the most vulnerable to scams — think about your parents and neighbours.

“The feedback we’re getting for our practical prevention solutions show we are making a positive difference and increasing confidence — that’s our aim.”

Councillor Vincent Waters, convener for environment, added: “The consequences of these scams — financial loss and extreme anxiety — can be devastating.

“Confidence at Home aims to help locals, their family, neighbours and clients to avoid the misery and stress of scams.

“It’s a great pack, full of very practical solutions — not just advice - and it’s a fantastic tool for residents to help themselves, and to help others.

“I hope people get the chance to see the film — if not, I would urge everyone to pick up a copy of the Confidence at Home pack and keep it handy.

“Don’t let the scammers win.”

For those who can’t make it to the launch event, packs are also available at council offices, or contact the team on 577 3782.
