THE man who robbed an insurance office in Shawlands did so using two pieces of pipe taped together.

Joseph Currie (46) pretended the pipes were the barrels of a shotgun when he entered the premises Jim Blair Insurance and threatened staff on February 28 of this year.

The robber told staff at the Kilmarnock Road office: “I have a package for you — a sawn-off shotgun.

“This is not a joke, give me money”.

Currie then left the office and was seen making his way to Shawlands Cross.

As police descended on the area, Currie discarded the pipes and the clothing he wore.

Currie confessed to the crime and the thief, who has a number of previous convictions, had his sentence deferred by Judge Lord Pentland at the High Court in Edinburgh for background reports.
