THis weekend, the Arches is the venue for a showcase of top female talent.
On Sunday, Marina Celeste, the Parisien singer famous for her quirky hits with Nouvelle Vague will play her only Scottish gig.
But first, it’s the turn of Mercury Music prize nominated band The Unthanks who have spent the last year touring Europe and America
Hailing from the North East of England, sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank will unleash their unsentimental and subversive tales of loss, fear and abuse to the Glasgow crowd.
The band’s unique approach has earned them a fairly wide appeal, with famous fans including Elvis Costello, Roseanne Cash and Radiohead.
Musician Robert Wyatt said:“They are like the morning dew that hasn’t steamed off yet, they are fresh and new.
“I really don’t think they know how good they are”.
Their 2009 release Here’s the Tender Coming won a number of awards to justify Mr Wyatt’s praise.
The duo’s new album Last features unlikely covers, including interpretations of King Crimson’s Starless, a Tom Waits song, and a song intended to champion the unheralded British songwriter Jon Redfern.
Faced with the difficult task of following the Unthanks, Marina Celeste will step up to the plate on Sunday with the help of Terry Hall — lead singer of 80’s ska legends The Specials.
Having toured the world with Nouvelle Vague, Marina is a polished stage presence and she has sold more than half a million records.
Terry Hall began to collaborate with Marina when they recorded a duet of Our Lips Are Sealed for the third Nouvelle Vague album.
He returned to Paris and recorded four more magical duets with Marina for The Angel Pop: La Femme Chat, Beds Are Burning, Two Loves and Do You?
She has released a pair of solo albums — Acidulé and Cinéma Enchanté — prior to her new release “The Angel Pop”.
Aswell as her burgeoning solo career, she also finds the time to work as both a painter and children’s writer.
