A MEDICATION to defeat C difficile has been given the thumbs up by NHS chiefs.
The antibiotic, Dificlir, has been proven to stop the bug recurring in more than half of cases.
Five years ago the Victoria Infirmary was hit by six cases of bacterial infection.
There was a recurrence the following year which closed one of the hospital’s wards.
C diff kills around 10 per cent of those affected by it – mainly elderly people.
Dificlir has now been cleared by the Scottish Medicines Consortium – the acknowledged body on new medications – for restricted use after it was shown that in tests only 12.7 per cent of patients suffered a recurrence of the bug compared to 26.9 per cent with the current treatment.
