THIS has been the best year ever in terms of exam achievement.

The education committee of East Ren council handed out praise to pupils, parents and education staff for playing their part in attaining the record-breaking results.

The committee noted that there was a significant increase in the percentage of pupils attaining Highers at fifth year, meaning that three out of every four students achieved one or more Highers, 59 per cent three or more and 39 per cent five or more.

In individual schools, Mearns Castle, Woodfarm, St Ninian’s and Williamwood all broke personal records for S5 pupils achieving three or more Highers – and five of the region’s schools had their highest performances at one or more Highers.

The number of young people achieving five or more Highers at grade A increased from 119 to 141.
