GIFFNOCK may not always strike readers as a “place for lovers”, but a new community artwork is based on just that.
Residents and members of the community council braved the rain yesterday to unveil Embrace, a project by artist Hill Jephson Robb now taking pride of position outside the Whole Foods store.
Funded by the Big Lottery and contributions from Prem Glasgow LLP and Whole Foods, the project then faced its toughest judges — pupils from St Ninians and Woodfarm high schools, who said it would create a “strong identity” for the area.
Community council chairman Hugh Moore told The Extra: “The bronze sculpture creates a special sense of place and a focal point for Giffnock.
“It represents the welcome embrace the community has to offer from the old to the young, from all faiths and cultures and the unseen work that many volunteers provide through connecting in the community.
We felt that it was time Giffnock had something special at its heart”.
