CHILDREN, parents and staff at Park nursery are celebrating the unfurling of its new Green Flag.
It is the only voluntary sector nursery in East Renfrewshire to earn the environmental award.

Youngsters at Park in Giffnock have strived for three years to land the accolade, spreading their message in the community and even building a wildlife garden.

Headteacher Gill Bain said: "We are so pleased. I was thrilled when I heard as everyone has worked so hard to achieve this.

"We couldn't have done it without the support of the parents, the hard work from the staff and the enthusiasm from the children.

"This is something for, not only the youngsters who are still here, but those who were here three years ago.

"We are all over the moon and glad our hard work has paid off".

Inspectors from Eco Schools visited the nursery last week and spoke to its eco committee.

Annie Lonergan (5) is a committee member and said it was exciting working towards the flag.

She said: "We did litter pick-ups, built birds nests, made a wildlife garden and even have an eco song.

"It was fun speaking to the lady inspector and we're glad she liked our nursery.

"Everyone is really happy we've achieved this".

Inspectors highly commended the nursery for the close relationship between it and the local community and parents.

Lisa McDill, East Ren's quality environment officer, said: "It was a pleasure to cut the ribbon to officially welcome the green flag into the wildlife garden.

"It is a superb achievement. What an experience this is to get the children outdoors and for them to love helping the environment".

Parent Caroline Stuart, whose son Harry is on the eco committee, said: "It's such a wonderful nursery, I would keep him here until he was 21 if I could.

"It is probably one of the most innovative nurseries in the area. Harry doesn't want to leave to start school".
