Kick the habit for No Smoking Day

NO Smoking Day falls next Wednesday (March 12) and this year’s theme is V for Victory.

The campaign message is that quitting can be hard, but with the right support it’s all the more possible — and East Renfrewshire CHCP is backing the cause.

East Renfrewshire Smokefree Community Services will be out and about on the day promoting local cessation services, accompanied by Stubbs, the Smokefree mascot.

Information points will also be on hand at Clarkston clinic, Eastwood Park’s council HQ, Barrhead Health and Care Centre and Barrhead council offices from Tuesday to Friday (March 11-14).

Councillor Alan Lafferty, convener for social care and health, said: “Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. The health benefits are almost immediate and include improvements in blood pressure, circulation and breathing.

“Quitting also makes you look better by improving your skin and teeth, and it helps your finances too, with smokers saving on average almost £3,000 a year if they quit.”

According to the service, giving up smoking for a week saves an average £56 — the equivalent of a family cinema trip, a pair of shoes or a meal for two. One year adds up to £2,920 — a new kitchen perhaps, or a dream holiday.

Councillor Lafferty added: “If you’ve tried to stop smoking before and been unsuccessful, keep trying. With the right help and support — along with determination — you can be successful and win your battle against tobacco.

“Remember that people who access support and licensed stop smoking products are four times more likely to stop and stay stopped than those who go it alone.

“CHCP Stop Smoking groups run regularly at Clarkston Clinic and Barrhead Health and Care Centre — to book a place or for more info, contact Smokefree Services on 577 4804.”
