Campsie Black Watch: 5

St Peters Giffnock: 1

Once again Watch had to depend on playing this league game at Merkland astro grass on Saturday, a ground where Blackies have played nearly all their home games this season.

Despite St Peters’ lowly position in the league they made it tough going for Watch for one hour in this game.

If they can raise their game to this level they should be in a better position in 21s football.

Watch opened strongly and went ahead in the sixth minute, from a Maguire header from midfield Aitken raced away from the visiting defence and cleverly lifted the ball over the outstretched hands of keeper McNicol’s.

From then on Saints began excellent team work and although they worked the ball well they could not trouble the Blackies defence. It was end to end play, most of it quality, but Watch were the biggest sinners in front of goal. The inevitable happened with Saints equalising in the 28th minute, from a Goudie corner on the right McGonigle reacted quickly to get a touch to put the ball over the line.

It was now a worrying time for Blackies although playing well they could not get through a visiting defence that was well organised.

The breakthrough came in the 60th minute when an Elliot pass to O’Hear saw the wing half ease past defender O’Kane and his cross saw Aitken net from eight yards.

The tension was off for Blackies, midfield trio Maguire, Elliot and O’Connor were now making their passes difficult for Saints’ defence.

Steven Aitken made it 3-1 and again it was superbly set up, a long ball down the left from full back O’Connell to Prentice and again as the week before the wing half produced tremendous skill. He crossed to the Campsie striker who had a difficult afternoon, but showed real skill by slamming the ball past helpless keeper to complete his hat-trick.

It was Aitken again in the 77th minute who scored his 36th goal of the season, from an O’Connor header the striker slammed the ball past keeper McNicol from 12 yards.

Saints players had played a large part in making this game entertaining, but they had gave so much they were now struggling to contain the many Watch attacks.

The final goal came in the 85th minute and it was one of real quality. Hamill, O’Connell and Cassidy were all involved in leading up, with the finish coming from Blackwood, who walloped the ball past the keeper from close in. Black Watch players have known for a long time they expect every game to see the opposition give their best against them.

Watch: M Storey, D McCluskey, J Hamill, A Graham, K O’Hear, J Maguire, J Elliot, P O’Connor, N Prentice, S Aitken, D Preston, G Pettigrew, D McWilliams, K Blackwood, R Murney, M Cassidy.
