“It’s a brilliant result for their band Falconhoof,” he said.

“Last year the winners were a band that included Nicholas McDonald, who went on to become an X-Factor finalist - now it’s the group from Abronhill, and what a fantastic achievement.

“They really have done us all proud - it couldn’t be better.”

Falconhoof beat Wishaw’s St Aidan’s High (last year’s winner), with Cardinal Newman High School in Motherwell coming in third.

More than just a performance night, the Battle of the Bands is the grand finale of a whole season’s training, bringing together many elements which won’t be automatically obvious to the audience.

Everything, from choosing the “right” numbers to perform to getting it perfect on the night, goes towards deciding the top act of the year.
