CULTURE vultures would do well to head to the city centre this week for the tenth annual Merchant City festival.

It’s 130 events across 54 venues, and includes everything from dance and music to street theatre, visual arts and comedy — as well as a new sports strand in anticipation of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

There are also three outdoor stages providing music and markets of Italian, Scottish and continental origins.

Glasgow city council leader Gordon Matheson, said that the festival “now serves as a true summertime celebration of the fantastic music, culture and artistic passion which is so palpable all around the Merchant City — demonstrable through the area’s wealth of cutting-edge arts organisations and venues”.

The Merchant City festival runs from today (July 21) until Sunday (July 24). Listings and ticket information are at www.merchantcityfestival.com.
