Rent: a tragic musical for today

A modern-day play based upon La Boheme.
A modern-day play based upon La Boheme.

FOR the puritans among us, doing a remake of La Boheme and calling it Rent must be akin to having The Simpsons’ Krusty the clown playing Pagliacci.

But this is a remake which doesn’t wish to dilute the original, it’s a musical which runs along broadly the same lines as the original tragic tale.

Originating in the US, this Tony award-winning musical play tells the story of a group of friends living in New York’s East Village, there hopes and aspirations and dealing with life in the age of HIV/AIDS.

As tragic as the opera which inspired it, Rent stars Natasha Hamilton (formerly an Atomic Kitten).

Rent is at the Clyde Auditorium and tickets are priced from £26.50 at www.ticketsoup.com.
