HISTORY buffs are invited to Rouken Glen park this weekend to catch a glimpse of the area as it once was.
Rare images of the park in the early 1900s have been donated to Friends of Rouken Glen by an anonymous benefactor, and will go on display to the public from Sunday.
The pictures hark back to when the park’s popularity was at its peak, and thousands of people flocked to it from Glasgow and Paisley each weekend.
The display will also be used to illustrate a talk on Old Rouken Glen, by resident historian Joy Blair – taking place at 3pm in the visitor centre.
Joy told The Extra: “I’m very grateful to the person who collected these little-known old photographs and postcards.
“After Lord Rowallan gifted Rouken Glen as a public park in the early 1900s, it became a very popular place. Tram services from both Glasgow and Paisley brought thousands of people, especially at weekends. Carts — pulled by Clydesdale horses — transported visitors around the park. One particular attraction was the band stand, and the entertainers who sang and danced there”.
Friends of Rouken Glen chairman, Gerald Levin, added: “Things may have changed in the park over the years, but its popularity with the public is undiminished”.
Entry to the talk is free, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
