Sing while we’re young

CLIFF Richard may not be one of the young ones any more — but at Eastwood Park Theatre, a new generation are cropping up this week.

The Young Ones is the latest show from EROS Musical Society, adapted from the 1961 film starring good old Cliff (and not, it has to be noted, the very different 80s comedy of the same name).

As is often the case with the am dram group’s work, it’s the first time the show has been staged in Scotland.

For those unfamiliar with the classic musical, the story follows a group of teens fighting to save their youth club from demolition at the hands of property tycoon Hamilton Black.

The plucky gang set out to raise the money needed by putting on a variety show – complete with a mystery singer at the top of the bill.

But who is this heartthrob drafted in out of nowhere? All will be revealed as the drama – and some foot-tapping songs – unfold.

Whether you’re a fan of Sir Cliff or not, you’re bound to recognise the tunes which more or less kick-started his career: Living Doll, Please Don’t Tease and – of course – The Young Ones.

The Clarkston-based, long established theatre troupe are sticking with a theme of fundraising for this performance, as it is affiliated with the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The charity supports young people aged 13-24 who are diagnosed with cancer – and EROS are encouraging their loving audience to support them too by coming along to the show.

So there you have it: a feel-good story, some show-stopping tunes and the chance to have a sing-along – and all in aid of a good cause.

Here at The Extra, we can’t help but think that Cliff himself would be proud.

n The Young Ones runs at Eastwood Park Theatre February 26 – March 2, with performances at 7.30pm plus a 2.30pm Sat mat. Tickets are £10-£14, available from 577 4970 or www.eastwoodparktheatre.co.uk.
