Ramsay cooks up a storm at the Good Food show
ENTHUSIASTIC foodies enjoyed a host of culinary delights as the BBC's Good Food Show Scotland visited the SECC for the third year in a row.
Scots are lucky to have such a wealth of fresh produce on their doorsteps – and that was highlighted at the event.
Well-known favourites such as Arbroath smokies, Dunsyre blue cheese and
Mackie's ice cream were there tempting tastebuds, as were preserves and handmade pies created on a smaller scale by local producers.
Not only were visitors able to buy the products, they were also able to see how to use them in meals.
Cookery demonstrations were given by top chefs and knowledgeable foodies.
Home-grown talents Tom Kitchin and Martin Wishart took to the main hall as part of Waste Aware Scotland's love food hate waste campaign.
Shouty chef Gordon Ramsay impressed visitors with his cheeky manner and cookery skills.
The Kitchen Nightmares star was a hit with the women – and even the men – showing how to make a quick and healthy cauliflower and sorrel soup.
Then four lucky people were chosen to taste his starter which was followed by cod with crispy potatoes and mustard lentils.
The chef – worth 67 million – served up an apple, prune and butterscotch compote for desert.
And not once did Ramsay utter the F word – much to the disappointment of his female fans.
MEANWHILE Extra reporter Elaine Liddle joined the Hairy Bikers for a Friday morning treat...
She writes: I've always thought you can't beat a cooked breakfast to start the day.
Turns out I was wrong – you can beat it by encasing the ingredients in pastry.
Such is the wonder of the breakfast pie, from Simple Simon's Perfect Pies – just one item chosen by the Hairy Bikers for a group of hungry journalists.
Simon King and David Myers – better known as just Si and Dave – provided breakfast at the Good Food Show Scotland at the SECC.
The amicable bikers kept up a running, entertaining commentary as we ate, revealing their fear of going onstage after Gordon Ramsay and a love of deep-fried Mars Bars, and praising the possibilities the event brings to Scottish chefs and suppliers.
Si explained: "It's like a shop window for the industry, showing off the great work chefs are doing".
Alongside the delicious pie (packed with shredded potato, bacon, egg, beef sausage, beans, tomato and Cheddar, since you ask) was smoked venison and handmade oatcakes, home-made jams, and organic Scottish cheese – all selected from stalls at the show.
But Si was forced to limp around the displays after a biking accident.
Dave said: "Sometimes people ask if we really ride the bikes, or if we cheat and take them by trailer when we're filming.
"But we've got 15,000 miles, a serious case of haemorrhoids and a dodgy knee to prove it".
