Musical twins

THE Ideal Band and a Russian balalaika ensemble combine in concert this Sunday to mark the 25th anniversary of the twinning of Glasgow with Rostov.

Their first combined outing at St Andrew's in the square this Sunday will be followed by a second show by both outfits next Thursday at Eastwood park theatre.

The three-piece acoustic band has performed around the world with its contemporary revival of 1930's Bob Smith's Ideal Band, which operated out of a bicycle repair shop in Dalmarnock.

The latter-day line-up led by Ken Campbell features new songs and instruments including Northumbrian pipes and mandolin in preparation for the musical collaboration.

It is 25 years since folk band Don Cossack Balalaika first performed in Scotland, bringing audiences here a vivid celebration of traditional music and dance from south western Russia's Rostov-On-Don.

The gateway to the Black sea, Rostov in northern Caucasia is now very much the focus of Don Cossack culture revival but in 1986 was twinned with Glasgow city council, which is part funding the event.

The Ideal Band, which headlined last year's Marymass festival in Irvine, heads east later this month to perform concerts around Rostov-On-Don to celebrate Scottish culture.
