Living the blues
A tale of the gritty working class life in Coatbridges toughest housing scheme comes to south side this week in Blue Hen.
And some may be shocked to see Coronation Street's Jim McDonald — who was played by the star of this show Charles Lawson — as the down-on-his-luck lead star.
Following the huge success of Singin' I'm no a Billy, He's a Tim play write Des Dillion is back with yet another gripping production in association with NLP theatre company.
The play's two main characters, Paddy and John, are two ordinary working class guys who are out of work and out of luck when they come up with a plan to keep them occupied and keep their bellies full — they're going to rear chickens in their garden and sell the eggs for profit.
But it's not easy being the only honest men in Coatbridge's roughest scheme and their venture doesn't exactly go to plan.
Can Paddy and John use their working class wits to get through this one intact? Or will the Coatbridge scheme strip them of their their dreams? All will be revealed in this gritty drama.
Charles Lawson, who plays Paddy told Live: "My character is a man down on his luck and needing some salvation. The play charts his life after being made redundant and his attempts to get himself back out the gutter".
"We find that people can either associate themselves with the characters or know someone like it. It's a realistic play with realistic values".
The NLP theatre company was set up by Scott Kyle, who is now the artistic director, in 2005. Scott set up the company with the intention of making a positive contribution to the arts industry in Scotland.
Scott intends to produce entertaining theatre that will appeal to new audiences .
Scott told Live: "We aim to attract people who might not be interested in theatrical works to our plays.
NLP have already made progress towards this goal after it was revealed 70% of the audience who attended previous show, Singing' I'm no a Billy, He's a Tim had never been to the theatre before.
And Scott hopes that this trend will continue with the new play as "it's a story steeped in real life issues that will connect with people".
Blue Hen comes to Eastwood Park Theatre on Friday 21 May. Curtains 7.30pm. Tickets, priced at 12 (10 concession) are available at the box office or by calling 0141 577 4970
