In the mood for love
IF music is the food of love then Glasgow has Valentine’s day covered.
The city’s venues are awash with festive-themed events this week, all promising romance and laughter for gig-goers both single and coupled-up.
For cabaret fans, there’s the Valentine’s special of A Song, a Sip and a Sandwich – the monthly musical slot at the Tron theatre.
Featuring smooch-worthy songs from Les Miserables, Ghost and more, the cast promise a date to remember on Sunday evening.
Taking to the stage for this month’s show are professional singers Stephen Arden, Darren Brownlie, Alison Rona Cleland and River City star Pamela Byrne.
Pamela is particularly in the mood for love, having just eloped to New York in January. The newly-wed commented: “I’m delighted to be back at the Tron and working with a wonderful cast. It’s a great afternoon out – you get the show, and a wee glass of vino too”.
Tickets for A Song, a Sip and a Sandwich cost £12 (including a glass of tipple), and are available from 552 4267.
If you’re looking to dance the night away on St Valentine’s day itself, the Pavilion is hosting a special edition of the regular Jukebox Memories slot.
Performers Dean Parks, Christian, The Swingcats and Chris Scougal have chosen the best love songs from their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s repertoire for a Tuesday night show especially for lovers.
Tickets for Jukebox Memories start at £13.50, and are available from 332 1846.
And if your music – or indeed your literary – tastes lean towards the classical, the Royal Scottish National Opera may be just the ticket.
The RSNO has two performances lined up this week, each a whirlwind of love and romance by the great composers.
On Saturday, it’s a Romantic Valentine evening, with excerpts from Mozart, Puccini and Strauss, and Christian Kluxen conducting.
And Thursday night’s offering is perhaps the ultimate romance in musical form, as RSNO tackle Prokofiev’s ballet score for Romeo and Juliet.
Prices start at £11 for the performances, both at the Royal Concert Hall – tickets are available on 353 8000.
Be it a good old sing-along for lovers or the world’s best-known romantic tragedy – either way, a ticket to one of Glasgow’s many Valentine’s shows may prove more popular than a last minute bouquet.
