Glad Cafe brings sounds to the suburbs

A NEW venture to bring up and coming bands to the southside will launch tomorrow night.

The Glad Caf is bringing Barn Owl, Conquering Animal Sound, and Tahir Tahira to the south for a gig at the Pollok ex-servicemen's social club – which some readers may know as the Tin Hut – on Titwood Road.

Glasgow boys Barn Owl have already rocked the T in the Park T-Break stage and their cross between strung out instrumentals, and thundering indie pop tunes.

Coming in from Edinburgh will be Conquering Animal Sound (aka Jamie Scott and Anneke Kampman) a duo who formed when they were at university together.

Making up the bill is Glasgow three-piece Tahir Tahira.

And The Glad Caf also has plans afoot to liven up Queen's Park Glasshouses in a month's time.

On December 27, colourfully costumed hip-hop act Fox Gut Daata and Nitram will play among the plants.

And the organisers told Scene: "With these shows, we're trying to discover if there is a market for putting shows like this on in the Southside, with a view to setting up a space where these events can be shown more frequently".

At the website, thegladcafe.com southsiders can post their views on whether they'd support a new venue and attend gigs in an online survey.

Meanwhile another southside event to look out for in the pre-Christmas rush is the Lucky Number Nine and Say Dirty records joint shindig at Pollokshields burgh hall.

On December 17, the two labels are joining forces for a Christmas treat, with live sets from Paper Planes, Peter Parker, and Symbolics – as well as DJ sets from Andy Divine and Chris 'Beans' Geddes.

The event will be just 3 on the door – a favourable price in the expensive festive season.

THE Glad Caf is at Pollok Ex-Servicemen's social club tomorrow (Friday, November 27) from 8pm. Tickets are 4, email thegladcafe@gmail.com or call 07854 388 226 to reserve.
