Footloose

DANCING its way through the local theatre this week is Eastwood Entertainers' production of Footloose.

It's the 80s all over again as the 31-strong cast performs the musical at Eastwood park theatre until Saturday.

Most will know the story from the successful 1984 movie starring Kevin Bacon.

The production includes iconic classics Almost Paradise, Holding Out for a Hero, Let's Hear it For the Boy and title song Footloose.

Jewellery shop worker Marelle Sturrock plays female lead Ariel Moore.

The 22-year-old told Live : "I have taken part in many shows but this one will be the best yet.

It is just very fun and everyone had a really good time rehearsing. Everything about it is great — but the music really stands out. It's 80s music and there is one scene with the song Holding on for a hero.

"We have four heroes in the story and they all get up and dance at that bit – it is really funny to watch and good technically".

The story is a classic tale of teen rebellion and repression centred on two main characters, Ariel and Ren MacCormack.

When Ren and his family move from Chicago to a small town in the west he has a real culture shock.

Though he tries hard to fit in, the streetwise teen can't believe he's living in a place where rock music and dancing are illegal.

There is one small pleasure for him in the shape of Ariel, the troubled teenage daughter of the town's bible-thumping minister, who is responsible for keeping the town dance-free.

Ren and his classmates want to do away with the law that bans dancing and rock music, especially as the senior prom is around the corner.

Marelle added: "I would urge everyone to come and see Footloose as it is very uplifting – they would be missing out if they didn't come".

TICKETS cost 10 via 577 4970. Footloose is on at 7.30pm tomorrow and Saturday with a matine (2.30pm) on the final day of the run.
