Flicks take a French fancy

THE Glasgow Film Festival is just around the corner — but as with many things, the youngsters are in on the act first.

Belleville Rendez-vous at The Arches is the first event in the calendar of the festival’s youth strand.

Performed by Fellswoop Theatre, it’s the story of Madame Souza and her fight to save grandson Champion, who has been kidnapped by mysterious crooks during a bike race.

She joins forces with an eclectic mix of characters, including an ageing jazz trio and Bruno the dog, all working together on an ambitious plan to rescue the lad from peril.

But the play is just the beginning for the Belle Rendez-vous team, who — along with the Glasgow Youth Film Festival — are taking over the Arches café with a rustic French bistro theme to celebrate the show.

The installation runs until March 31, and visitors can enjoy performances on specific dates throughout, as well as a special French menu and distinctly Gallic décor. And on top of all that, the group are running film to stage workshops for budding young thespians, taking place before the performance – at 11am for ages eight and up, and at 3pm for ages 14+.

Our advice to young arts fans – get on your bike to the Arches this weekend.

Bellville Rendez-vous starts at 7pm, and tickets cost £7 (£5 concession) – available from 565 1000. Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult. To find out more, visit www.thearches.co.uk.
