IN RECENT weeks we’ve visited the King’s, the Citz, Queen’s Park church and Eastwood Park Theatre for a dose of Christmas pantomime.
This week, it’s time to perfect those calls of “oh yes he is!” for perhaps the biggest show of all — the SECC’s Jack and the Beanstalk.
Once again, the annual show at the Clyde Auditorium features Glasgow-born king of camp, John Barrowman, and panto stalwarts the Krankies.
It follows on from two years of record-breaking Christmas shows, most recently Robinson Crusoe and the Caribbean Pirates in 2011 – and who could forget those images of the trio swabbing the decks of Glasgow’s own tall ship?
This year’s show was originally billed as Robin Hood, but after a change of heart (and presumably a change of wardrobe), John is back to play our bean-swapping, stalk-climbing hero Jack, alongside turns from Ian and Janette Krankie as Farmer Trot and Jimmy Trot — not to mention, Daisy the panto cow.
As with previous pantomimes at the Clyde Auditorium (affectionately known as the Armadillo — no prizes for guessing why), Jack and the Beanstalk is a 3D performance, promising brand new surprises leaping from the enchanted forest and the giant’s castle.
But it’s arguable that the stars of the show are...well...the stars of the show, with the venue’s head of concert and events, Allan Snedden, commenting: “We’re delighted that we will be welcoming John and the Krankies back to the SECC once again.
“They are a winning combination, and the hilarious banter between the trio is unbeatable”.
Audience numbers at the previous two outings would suggest that Glasgow feels the same way — so if you’re still undecided about which panto to attend, a climb up the beanstalk and into the precarious land of the giant might just be the way to go.
n Jack and the Beanstalk runs at the SECC Clyde Auditorium from December 15 — January 6. Tickets start at £12, available on 0844 395 4000 or at www.ticketSOUP.com. Tickets pre-booked for Robin Hood are still valid for Jack and the Beanstalk.
