Ben Howard: folk like him

editorial image

TO HAVE your debut album nominated for the Mercury Prize is not something that happens to every songwriter.

However, Englishman Ben Howard isn’t your average artist. His album, Every Kingdom, shot to prominence last year and immediately landed him spots at major festivals across the world.

To many people, it was an unlikely cover that caught their attention. When the hugely popular folk star featured on Fearne Cotton’s Live Lounge on BBC Radio one in May this year, he took the unlikely step of covering Carly Rae Jepsen’s mega-hit Call Me Maybe in a brooding, intense style that few could pull off.

Ben Howard’s UK tour began on Friday at The Dome in Brighton and it will conclude with his biggest headline show to date, at London’s 02 Academy Brixton at the end of the month.

On Saturday, the singer travels to Glasgow to play the 02 ABC, when he will be supported by Willi Mason.
