Aussie Ben brings sweet sounds to Southside

MOVING to Glasgow can have its advantages, particularly if you're a musician.

As well as a wealth of venues, the city has a strong musical community.

Just ask Ben TD, who settled here in 2006.

He told Scene: "I had been doing the traditional Australian thing of deciding I needed to get out and see the world and had travelled to the US before deciding to go to the Edinburgh festival.

"When I got to Scotland I had run pretty low on cash and decided I should stay for a while.

"Edinburgh just wasn't for me and I'd heard great things about Glasgow so I headed over here.

"It's been fantastic and so many people I met through gigs just welcomed me with open arms".

Ben – real second name Talbot-Dunn – has now released his debut album Tiny Movements with a little help from his Glasgow music scene friends.

He explained: "The first person I really got to know was Jo Mango, who is doing really well for herself.

"I met her at Nice'n'Sleazy's open mic night and started to meet other friends and found a whole community of people involved in either performing or helping artists out.

"Jo's brother Jim agreed to act as my manager and it was her partner, Calum Scott, who recorded the album for me in his home studio".

Ben (24) added: "It was a great experience creating the album. Last year I did a limited release at shows in Glasgow but now it's on full release and I'm doing some touring to get it out there".

As well as a Glasgow show on August 6 at Twisted Wheel, he'll be travelling to Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh with a full band before doing some solo shows in England.

But Ben is no stranger to touring – at the age of just 14 he and brother Sam formed a band, Ruby's Grace, which spent six years touring Australia and produced two albums and two EPs.

He said: "It's been quite different striking out on my own but so far, I've enjoyed it a lot".

Catch Ben TD at Twisted Wheel, Queen Street, on August 6, 8pm.
