All new comedy

Eve Myles

IT WOULD seem an unlikely pairing of two TV stars.

He found fame as the scatty, would-be doctor in the American sitcom Scrubs, while she cemented her fame as the Welsh cop turned alien hunter and saviour of the earth in Torchwood.

But Zach Braff and Eve Myles have joined up for a new comedy play, All New People.

Written by the former Scrubs star — who has been displaying so much versatility by also writing and directing the comedy film Garden State — Braff takes centre stage as the main protagonist, Charlie.

In the dead of winter, at his wealthy friends’ luxury Long Beach Island apartment, Charlie has hit rock bottom on his 35th birthday.

Away from the rest of the world, this perfect escape is interrupted by a motley parade of misfits who show up and change his plans.

A hired beauty, a fireman and an eccentric, British real estate agent desperately trying to stay in the country all suddenly find themselves tangled together in a beach house where the mood is anything but sunny — while Charlie just wishes they would leave and let him get on with it.

Eve Myles has become an easily frecognised face on British telly after she reprised her Doctor Who role of Gwen for the spin-off TV series, Torchwood (which is an anagram of Doctor Who — clever, isn’t it?).

Eve said of the play: “I’m delighted to have been cast as the character of Emma in such a well-anticipated and funny play.

“Having concentrated on TV work recently, I’m excited to be returning to the stage and I’m very much looking forward to working with Zach and Peter (DuBois, the director)”.

Also joining the cast is Susannah Fielding, who made her name as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

Her recent TV work includes Wallander, Doctor Who and Peter Versus Life.

Susannah said: “I am very excited to be appearing on the stage in All New People.

“With such a witty script and some fabulous lines, I am really looking forward to getting my teeth into playing the role of Kim”.

All New People is at the Theatre Royal from Tuesday, February 14 until Saturday, February 18.

The play begins at 7.30pm (with 2.30pm matinees on Wednesday and Saturday) and tickets costs between £12 and £29.50.
