Council say leisure centre is not closing

Eastwood Park Leisure Centre will remain open say council.

Concerns have been raised that Eastwood Leisure Centre is intentionally being run down in order that ERC can justify closing it.

An Extra reader, Nicola Geary claims that at a recent meeting of Giffnock Community Council on December 19 council leader Jim Fletcher reported that the future of the Eastwood Leisure Facilities remains uncertain.

The Extra has checked the minutes for the meeting of December 19, and under S.10-Questions it states: “Cllr Fletcher reported that the future of the Eastwood Leisure Facilities remains uncertain and under consideration.”

However, The Extra can confirm there are NO plans to run down, or close the centre.

A council spokesman said: “We are always considering ways that we can improve and upgrade all of our facilities to ensure we can offer our residents the very best opportunities to get involved in sport and physical activity.

“Eastwood Park Leisure is an important asset which has served the community for more than 40 years, and as we consider the best way to upgrade this facility we have already identified capital funds, to be invested from 2018, to ensure it continues to be valued by our residents.

“Together with East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure Trust, which operates the facility, we will consider a range of options before deciding on the best way forward for developing this important community amenity.”

Councillor Fletcher spoke with us and confirmed that this is indeed the position, and that it is highly likely the minutes of the meeting are not perhaps as fulsome as they could have been, and which would have detailed the full discussion which took place.

He said: “I accept I should have checked the minute and corrected any errors, particularly the comment about the future being uncertain.”
