New exhibition lifts lid on Scots’ diet
The Lifting the Lid exhibition is debuting at Barrhead Library and will tour East Renfrewshire libraries until July.
Aspiring historians from St. John’s Primary in Barrhead were some of the first visitors to preview the exhibition last week and groups of Primary five and seven pupils also got involved in an interactive history lesson, led by the National Library of Scotland at the Foundry.

They were also introduced to the brand new Lifting the Lid display, which is a history lesson centred around food and drink in Scotland and traditions. The exhibit is now being enjoyed by everyone from school pupils and library users to those using our fitness facilities.
“We’re also looking forward to welcoming curator Olive Geddes to Giffnock Library next month to explore Scotland’s changing relationship with food and drink and the myths and traditions associated with peoples’ diets over the last 400 years.”
Part of a Scotland-wide tour that aims to introduce the National Library’s collections to people across the country, close to where they live, the Lifting the Lid exhibition is free to attend and helps visitors understand more of how their ancestors lived and how their diet links to what we eat today.
