CLARKSTON girl Kasey Randall may only be four – but she’s already a big bookworm.

The avid reader was recognised as part of National Libraries Day recently, after borrowing an incredible 492 books from Clarkston library last year.

The youngster joined just after her second birthday – but has been attending Bookbug sessions with mum Emma since she was just weeks old.

All those library loans have paid off, as Kasey was named East Renfrewshire’s Young Reader of the Year and presented with an award.

Also in attendance was overall Reader of the Year, Evelyn Garden, who borrowed 388 books in 2012.

Evelyn commented: “I’ve always loved libraries and reading. It’s such a pleasure to go into my local branch where the staff are knowledgeable and helpful.

“Reading is one of the best things for a young mind – and it helps keep my mind active too.”

Leo Kumagai (14) was named Teen Reader of the Year for clocking up 324 books, followed by Euan Cameron and Dylan Thomson as joint Young Borrowers of the Year, and Lukas Nielson, also recognised in the teen category.

Mary McQuillan and Elsie Munro, the top adult borrowers at the Clarkston library, were presented with their awards at a separate event.

Presenting the certificates, councillor Mary Montague, convener of community services and community safety, said: “It’s wonderful to see so many people and from different generations using our services and to meet such prolific readers.

“We will continue to invest in our services to ensure we offer libraries fit for the 21st century, to to keep the minds of our residents, young and old, active.”
