RESIDENTS of East Renfrewshire will mark International Women’s Day once again next month with an event at Clarkston halls.

The global date is set for March 8 this year, but those involved in Clarkston’s nod to female power are getting in on the action early, planning a celebration for March 3.

A dedicated team of women are working to organise the Lottery-funded day, which will include local groups showcasing their work under the heading of community spirit and, it is hoped, encourage neighbours to get involved too.

Chair of the organising committee Rena McGuire, from Dunterlie, told The Extra: “International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.

“It means we have the opportunity to allow all the groups in our area to show the vibrant community life in East Renfrewshire”.

As well as information from East Ren’s police and fire services and community carers, the day will also include parent and child workshops, stalls and an insight into community groups of all types.

But the timetable hasn’t been finalised yet, and Rena — who has been involved in organising the event for four years — is keen to hear from groups willing to be involved (regardless of gender).

“We would be interested to hear from anyone who would like to take part in any way, from holding a workshop to providing information about what they do.

“The groups do not need to be women-only: we want to show the part women contribute to wider society. We would also like to hear from any women living or working in East Ren who would like to be part of our steering group and help shape the event”.

The group will be running free bus services between the hall and Barrhead sports centre throughout the day, and all are welcome.
