Queen’s award for Clarkston guide
AN assistant guider with the 1st Clarkston group has attained the highest badge of all – the Queen’s Guide Award.
Corinne Shand (22) was recently invited to the House of Lords by baroness Janet Royall, where she was presented with the award – the highest attainable for members of Girlguiding UK – by chief guide Gill Slocombe.
The accolade took nearly three years to achieve, with Corinne completing five different sections including gaining a campers licence and camp first aid certificate, and organising the group’s Operation Christmas Child shoebox collection.
Her final challenge was to plan a road trip around Scotland’s guide and scout camp sites – and Clarkston girl Corinne passed with flying colours.
The Strathclyde University student told The Extra: “Guiding has been a part of my life for so long that I’m glad I decided to go for this.
“It took a long time and was a lot of hard work but I enjoyed it and my visit to the House of Lords”.
