Out of respect . . .

RESIDENTS young and old donned their poppies at the weekend in honour of the country’s war dead.

Events in both Glasgow and East Renfrewshire ushered in Remembrance Sunday – a mark of respect for soldiers who fell in the First World War and beyond.

The date was noted by school pupils on Friday, as Glasgow schools gathered at the city chambers for a special event aimed at giving young people an understanding of the issue of war.

Hosting were pupils from Shawlands Academy, and the day included presentations and performances by participating schools — including Battlefield primary and Holyrood secondary.

Over in East Renfrewshire, it was a chance for Neilston primary to pay their respects.

The youngsters were joined by councillor Paul O’Kane at a remembrance event, during which they constructed their own memorial area with wooden crosses, and laid wreaths in memory of fallen soldiers.

Friday also saw the Friends of Duff Memorial Halls gather for a service at the Busby site, where two books of condolence were on public display.

Both authorities also held public services on Sunday – in Glasgow, residents and council figures gathered at George Square, and in East Renfrewshire, memorials were held at Mearns Cross, Neilston and Cowan Park.

East Ren Provost Alastair Carmichael summed up the day as “very poignant and touching”.
