SUPERMARKET chain Asda are pushing ahead with plans to build a Barrhead store after receiving 98 per cent support from residents.

The company recently held a consultation on proposals for a £20 million store, to be situated on land bordered by Church Street, Main Street and Levern Water.

The consultation period included two community engagement events attended by more 150 residents, and information gathered from those in attendance – as well as 156 written responses – show widespread support for the project.

Of the responses, 98 per cent backed the new Barrhead supermarket, with a further 94 per cent replying that more supermarket choice was needed in the area.

Lisa Rooke, Asda’s property communications manager for Scotland, said: “We are excited about our proposals for Barrhead and would like to thank everybody who took the time to attend the engagement events and feed their views into the planning process.

“Following months of engagement with residents and local groups in the area, we believe our proposals reflect the clear needs and desires of the community.

“Our proposals will enable us to make a signifcant investment in the town, regenerate a currently redundant site and generate up to 200 new jobs for local people”.

If approved, the new 25,000 square foot superstore will include a petrol station and 250 car parking spaces (including two electronic car charge points).

Asda has promised up to 200 full and part-time positions when the supermarket opens, as well as an estimated 200 construction roles.

East Renfrewshire MP Jim Murphy launched a campaign last month in a bid to secure the majority of those jobs for Barrhead residents, and has written to the council to ask that it is made a condition for approving the development.

He commented: “I recently revealed new figures which show that there are 16 unemployed people in Barrhead for every job in the town.

“With such a serious jobs crisis, it’s only right that as many as possible of the 200 new jobs that could come with the proposed Asda development go to Barrhead residents”.

In return, Asda has pledged a recruitment centre to be set up in Barrhead, which will target job seekers and maximise their chances of landing a position in-store.

Plans for the supermarket will now go before East Renfrewshire council’s planning committee.
