Green light for supersized Silverburn
SILVERBURN shopping centre has received planning consent for a long-planned £20 million extension and cinema complex.
The Pollok centre announced a 250,000 sq ft proposal in July last year, launching a consultation with the southside community, stakeholders and existing tenants.
It was an amended version of plans first set out in 2010, as, according to Silverburn bosses, the community had asked for more catering options and “enhanced landscaping”.
Glasgow city council has now given the green light to nine new restaurants, several redesigned shops and new landscaping, as well as a 50,000 sq ft, 11-screen cinema to the rear of the complex.
Silverburn owner Hammerson and partner CPPIB estimates that up to 350 permanent jobs will be created by the move, adding to 2,000 current employees – 70 per cent of which are from southwest Glasgow.
Silverburn centre director David Pierotti said: “We are thrilled to have secured planning for this exciting extension.
“We expect the development will be a further revitalisation to the Pollok community with the prospect of employment, training and our continued commitment to local partnerships.”
The plan provoked debate among readers last year, with many commenting that the expansion could have a negative effect on neighbouring communities.
This week, the news prompted mixed reactions from The Extra’s social media followers.
Referring to last week’s front page story, on the possibility of G1 opening a Shawlands cinema (which could face competition from Silverburn), Twitter follower Chris Cameron said: “I’d rather see the long-discussed reinstatement of Tusk as a cinema finally go ahead – but no complaints from me.”
@mojowatt added: “There’s room for a cinema in Shawlands and Silverburn, I think” – a view echoed by more southsiders, who welcomed the shopping centre overhaul.
However, for Vonnie Sandlan, the move is “absolutely dreadful. I live near Silverburn and the traffic is a nightmare. Why on earth has this plan been approved when Braehead is so close and Silverburn has multiple units lying empty?”
@AnonymousMortal added: “They need more parking as it is, let alone more shops, restaurants and leisure facilities.”
Work on the Silverburn extension is expected to start in the next few months, with a completion date of summer next year. The cinema expected to open several months later.
