Glasgow to host dance championships

GLASGOW has been selected to host the World Street Dance Championships over the next three years.

The event will take place at the Clyde Auditorium and SECC in August this year, 2014 and 2015, where dancers and dance crews from all over the world will compete for the title.

It is expected to attract 6,000 visitors each year, and add £7 million to the city’s economy.

Simon Dibley, of the United Dance Organisation (UDO) said: “Glasgow’s excellent presentation, coupled with the genuine warmth and distinctly stylish vibe of the city, really appealed to us.

“Street dance is a genre which has grown in popularity in recent years and one which is truly inclusive – attracting people from all ages, cultures and economic backgrounds.

“We’re very excited about bringing the World Street Dance Championships to Glasgow over the next three years”.

Glasgow city council leader Gordon Matheson welcomed the event, commenting: “More than 80 per cent of attendees will come from outwith Scotland – providing a significant boost to our economy.

“The UDO’s decision to bring their flagship event to Glasgow is a huge vote of confidence in the city.

“It is one which reflects the standout success and continuing growth of our tourism sector as well as out cutting-edge style credentials and our reputation for winning and delivering major events”.

The August final will follow qualifying heats, and the Scottish leg of the UK and European trials will be held on June 9 at Glasgow’s new Emirates arena.
