Christopher Quinn, Neil Wood and Nicole Dempster are shoe-ins for the Scottish Youth Parliament election.

A TRIO of East Renfrewshire youngsters have stepped up to the political plate.

Christopher Quinn (20), from Barrhead, Nicole Dempster (16) from Newton Mearns and Neil Wood (14), from Neilston have put themselves forward to represent young people at the Scottish Youth Parliament.

The national scheme may be good practice for Christopher, who studies politics and social policy at the University of the West of Scotland, as well as for Nicole and Neil (both Eastwood high pupils).

Councillor Mary Montague, convener of community services and community safety, commented: “It’s terrific to see three of our young people standing for the youth parliament.

“It’s important for young people to have their voices heard. It’s good for East Renfrewshire that we have such able and enthusiastic candidates for our area.”

The youth parliament, set up in 1999, is for young Scots aged 14-25. Members are democratically elected for two years – term beginning in April – according to online votes from anyone aged 12-25.

However, East Renfrewshire has three seats at the SYP – so all three candidates are guaranteed a place.
