IT WAS an assured win for Kirkhill when the East Ren primary school scooped an honour at Sportscotland.

The school took pride of place among Olympic athletes such as Chris Hoy, Andy Murray and Katherine Grainger at the awards ceremony.

Kirkhill was runner up in the School Sport Award, the only primary to be nominated, for its efforts to encourage pupils to take part in some form of physical education.

Head teacher Yvonne Donaldson said: “It was wonderful.

“A lot of people came up to us and congratulated us on getting through to the final.

“We’ve strived to give our pupils from P1-7 many opportunities to discover their talents and ignite a passion and a love for sport.

“Next year we want to win!”

Sport and physical activity have been placed at the heart of of the school’s ethos.

The school was one of the first in Scotland to exceed the minimum two hours of physical exercise required in the school curriculum.

Councillor Paul O’Kane, vice-chair of the education committee, said: “This is a great result for all at Kirkhill primary.

“The teachers, pupils and parents should be very proud of their success.

“I’m confident that the pupils will be reaping the benefits of the staff’s dedication to their fitness for the rest of their lives.”

Kirkhill’s pupils are given the opportunity to participate in 13 after school sports clubs offering football and netball along with athletics, zumba, hockey, rugby, cricket, golf and breakdancing.

For the initiative to succeed, the co-operation of parents, teachers and local sports clubs was essential to work and encourage pupils to get involved and do more.

For the teachers, the highlight of the awards ceremony was when British Olympian and former Kirkhill primary school pupil Susan Egelstaff came over to congratulate the school.

Mrs Donaldson said that the badminton player had promised to come into the school and address the pupils.
